Everything stated in this blog is an opinion and a deeper thinking of the subject by writer. In this case it’s me, Star.
Those of you may not know, that Goodnight n’ Go is actually a cover and remake of the cover Goodnight and Go by Imogen Heap. Although the songs are very similar they speak to different audiences but speak the same language.
I’m a fan of both artists even though they have very unique styles and sounds. Musically, this songs calls for a singer with control. One that involved runs, octaves and riffs. This song is made for people who love music. Ariana does the song justice, because Ariana is a lover of music through and through. She sings the riffs and runs with grace, and honors Imogen Heap because who wouldn’t honor a goddess.
In terms of writing, Imogen Heap is more of a poet. While Ariana knows how to speak directly to her audience. So in order to give light to this beautiful song she simplified the lyrics. Instead of Imogen’s storytelling tactic, Ariana transformed the song into a conversation.
Although Imogen’s style is very dreamy it’s also very cheery, while Ariana begins cheery but becomes more of a wanting desire. As if Imogen’s song was a daydream and Ariana’s version was a deep slumber dream. Both songs have a since for bliss and with the vocals of layering harmonies it’s mystifying.
First Verse- Imogen
Skipping beats, blushing cheeks I am struggling
Daydreaming, bed scenes in the corner café
And then I’m left in bits recovering tectonic tremblings
You get me every time
Here, Imogen paints the picture and sets the scene for you. She’s recalling an intimate moment with a lover in her mind as she sits in a cafe. The feelings of bliss is still strong in her memory and she can’t overcome it.
First Verse- Ariana
Tell me why you gotta look at me that way
You know what it does to me
So baby, what you tryna say? Ayy
Lately, all I want is you on top of me
You know where your hands should be
So baby, won’t you come show me? Mmm
I got you, I got you dreamin’ (oh)
You close your eyes and you’re screamin’ (oh)
Play with your mind for no reason
I know you love how I tease it (oh, oh)
You know that I’m playin’, so don’t be mistaken
You already know what I’m thinkin’, boy
Ariana is just a little more descriptive about what exactly she loved about the intimate moment. She talks about the caresses and how she can’t stop thinking about it. She also suspects the boy knows her feelings and is giving her what she wants.
Lyrics that stayed the same
One of these days, you’ll miss your train and come stay with me
It’s always say goodnight and go
We’ll have drinks and talk about things, any excuse to stay awake with you
You’ll sleep here, I’d sleep there, but then the heating may be down again
At my convenience
We’d be good, we’d be great together.
Why’d you have to be so cute?
It’s impossible to ignore you, ah
Why must you make me laugh so much?
It’s bad enough we get along so well
Just say goodnight and go
Oh, oh, oh
Just say goodnight and go
The meaning behind this verse and chorus is the core of the song. (At least it is to me.) Because it brings the thought past the surface of just sexual attraction. It explains that the singer wants more time to prove that they could be more than casual sex partners. So much so that they can sleep in different places but the universe will pull them together again and that’s okay too. The singer explains that the facts are hard to ignore and instead of spending all this time dreaming perhaps it’s best if they were to leave instead of stay. Of course this is a one sided daydream and conversation and that is what makes the song so sad. That maybe all these feelings are just in the singer’s mind.
I tear up every time.
